Do Clothes Make The Man or Woman?

fashion-plates2I have a confession, I was a child of the 1980’s. I was born in the seventies, but I lived my most formative years in the eighties. It’s fun to think back to the toys of our childhood and remember how they influenced us. One special toy for me was Fashion Plates by Tomy.

For those of you who may not know what Fashion Plates are, they were a series of plastic plates each with a different article of clothing on them (i.e. Tops, pants, skirts, shoes, etc.). The child would assemble an entire outfit made of these plates then place a piece of paper on top and rub a crayon across. Viola! You would have a picture of a very stylish outfit. Fashion Plates reinforced the idea of “dressing up” to me at a fairly young age.

So what do Fashion Plates have to do with human resources? Looking back, I realize that it was during those years that I began noticing that fashion choices affect how we think of others and our fashion choices affect how we are received. I began wondering, do clothes really make the man or woman?
